If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms you may have an eye infection. First course of action will be to contact your healthcare provider, without further delay. Let them know your symptoms and ask to see someone immediately, if necessary go to Urgent Care.
- Watery eyes
- Itching and swelling
- Sensing the presence of debris or foreign objects in the eye
- Pain
- Photophobia or sensitivity to light
- Discharge from the eyes (mainly bloody, green or yellow discharge seen around inner corners)
- Any type of sore
- Unexpected fever
- Reduced or blurred vision
If it is an eye infection it could be any number of viral, fungal and bacterial infections. On the other hand there can be a number of other reasons behind eye irritations, including chemicals, minor injuries, eye allergies or irritation from contact lenses. Your medical provider will do a clinical examination to identify the issue, following which, eye drops and other medications may be suggested.
If the redness, swelling and pain in the eye is a result of a viral or bacterial infection and it must first be checked by a healthcare expert, who then may refer the case to an optometrist for follow-up or additional treatment.
